Northern Ireland’s second largest city has long had a split identity: Derry to Irish nationalists & Londonderry to unionists. Some public bodies now refer to Derry/Londonderry – spoken as “Derry stroke Londonderry” – which then gave rise to the jocular “Stroke City”.
Derry/Londonderry is a fine example of a walled city. Brass plaques have been set into the pavement as you walk the more than one mile of wall.
